In recent years, it seems like Hollywood and other major film industries are running dry on the film ideas. This is has clearly been shown with the amount of sequels, prequels and remakes that are happening and have happened. Some have been very good, some…..not so good to put it nicely.
There have been some pretty surprising announcements as to which films are being remade and some of them you should be pretty excited about. Here are a list of some upcoming film remakes that are happening in the next couple of years – some of them you may have heard about, others not!
If you have been living under a rock somewhere for the last year, you should know by now that the 1991 Disney classic Beauty and the Beast is being brought to life in live-action. That’s right – every single object in the Beast;s towering castle is getting brought to life – literally. Emma Watson (Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter franchise) is down to play Belle, Dan Stevens (Matthew Crawley from Downton Abbey) is playing the Beast, and Luke Evans (Apollo from Clash of the Titans) is portraying Gaston. The film is set to be released March 17th 2017.
Disney is currently going through a phase of remaking classic Disney films, and Mary Poppins is also next in line to come back in full force. This film, which unfortunately will be starring Julie Andrews in it (that we know of yet), has the wonderful talents of Emily Blunt (Girl on the Train) playing the titular role, and Lin-Manuel Miranda and Meryl Streep playing seemingly new characters Jack and Topsy respectively. The film is currently set to be released Christmas Day 2018.
The classic 1995 Robin Williams film Jumanji is being brought back to cinema screens over 20 years since the original, and follows a group of 4 teenagers being transported into the game and being transformed into different alter-egos. The group’s “game characters” are being played by Dwayne Johnson (a brave explorer), Kevin Hart (a tiny genius), Jack Black (a female bookworm professor) and Karen Gillan (an Amazonian warrior). This film is set to be released December 22nd 2017.
The original film IT scared me to death when I was a young child (so much so that I now can’t look at Tim Curry ever without hyperventilating), and I’m hoping this film does this to me too (but not to the extent of not being able to watch any of Bill Skarsgård’s work – that would be devastating.) This film stars Bill Skarsgård as previously mentioned (you can see his ability to portray a character like Pennywise in the show Hemlock Grove), and also has a host of very talented child actors including Jaeden Lieberher from Masters of Sex, and Finn Wolfhard who shone in the Netflix hit Stranger Things. This film is set to be released September 8th 2017.
